Choosing the right solid wood dining table

A solid wood table will serve you for decades. Oak is hard, forgives scratches and darkens slightly over time. Ash looks lighter and has a lively grain. Walnut is dark and warm, but softer than oak.

Allow about 60 cm of table edge per person. A table 180 cm long seats six comfortably, and at 200 to 220 cm it seats eight. Keep at least 80 cm clear between the table and the wall so you can push your chair back.

Common questions

What is a normal table height?

Most dining tables are 74 to 76 cm high. There should be roughly 28 to 32 cm between the seat and the tabletop. Check the seat height of your chairs before you order.

Oiled or lacquered?

Oiled wood feels natural and can be touched up in patches. Lacquer protects better against stains, but is harder to repair. For families with young children, a hard wax oil is a good middle ground.

Does solid wood move?

Yes. Wood absorbs moisture and releases it again. Small hairline cracks at the ends are normal. Do not place the table right next to a radiator, and keep the humidity in your home between 40 and 60 %.
