A coffee table should be about two thirds the length of your sofa. A gap of 40 to 50 cm between sofa and table works well: close enough to reach a glass, far enough for your legs.
Ideally the tabletop sits level with the seat or a few centimetres below it. For most sofas that means 35 to 45 cm.
Common questions
Round or rectangular?
Round tables take up less space and have no corners to bump into. Rectangular tables offer more surface and suit a long sofa.
Wood or stone?
Wood feels warm and is easier to move around. Stone is heavy, cool and very stable. Feel free to match your coffee table and dining table in the same material.
